My Sun, Her Moon is dedicated to my beloved mother, Carmen for her 60th birthday.
The sun, earth and moon are held together by gravity — moving relative to each other, creating phases and eclipses.
She is my sun and I am her moon. Like the moon orbiting earth and the earth orbiting the sun, our lives are intertwined as one; from the beginning just the two of us. Our heritage grounds our orbit. Our shared memories and lessons create the phases and eclipses that mark the seasons of our lives. Through her resilience, grace, courage and love — I see the harmony of being.
As an extension of my Bloodline I and II series, where I explored the generations of women before me and what that meant for who I could become, this series also draws from my Gong-bi painting; realist Chinese ink painting with a floral focus. Reminiscent of botanical illustrations in its depth of detail, the technical attributes of Gong-bi gave me the language to nuance my current style: rendering acrylic paint as sumi-ink, onto canvas as rice paper, to capture the motion of ink as it is poured in water and the new possibilities of 余白.
Influenced by the spacial balance in Ikebana, in these compositions the void speaks as loud as the subject itself. The three main stems in Ikebana, "shin (真)", "soe (副)", and "hikae (控)” each symbolize heaven, earth and mankind. Together, they mirror my theme in this series.
Empty is full,
always is a moment.
In the subtle layers of black, white, gray and 余白, I see endless new possibilities of being, a philosophy without words.
